Cruella de Vil? Though I must confess that I'm working off dim memories of Disney rather than whoever she was in the novel. It really is a sparse field.
I'd be totally willing to discuss the nuances of outrecuidance vs. hubris! If you're game. I think the Greek tragic roots of the latter really set it off, and that's something most overlook.
Also, I feel yaa on the French. I used to be a published French translator, but it's been a decade since i could talk to anyone.
I don't know the French word well enough. I've done a lot of translation in the past, and sometimes used Renaissance French dictionaries--just pointing out that you could try a French-language archaic French dictionary. I had to use one to translate French officer's manuscripts in an archive. Was terribly fun reading their beautiful calligraphy from the 17th century.
Oo neato! Yeah the oldest I’ve been familiar with is Rostand’s Cyrano--that was what, 1820ish? I do seem to recall we actually read some Voltaire and some Rabelais, though, in AP French in high school but that was a LONG time ago.....
Well I mean I did think about Onatopp and the Grace Jones character but they’re secondary villains. They’re not the main antagonist of the story. Is there a woman who’s the main villain? Not the villain’s villainous henchperson?
It's sad that this is true. I mean, terminator 3 is a robot woman, and Cathy Bates is another similar hyperbolic male fantasy in the movie misery. The Michael Douglass movie with the obsessed nanny the same. Two movies by kyrasawa, ran and rashoman.the throne of blood to. Thanx again

O yeah! Yeah we’ve got Maleficent and Yzma too, if we look at Disney. And Snow White’s evil queen.
So a loose translation is "legend in his own mind" 😂
TOTally
Interesting point about the gender difference in watching the arrogant fall! Now I’ll be pondering that to see if I can think of any other exceptions.
I can’t really, except for Umbridge. And she’s ’ish.’

Is that the only difference, do you think? The Greek tragedy-ness?

There have been some few but notable bond villannissed.

True that but some of the men villains remind of woman perhaps.
I can do a whole 'nother article on queer-coded and/or feminized male villains. That's totally a thing.
The cell and computers in this part of equadore south america don't work any more than a monkey making love to a football.
