This stereotype is most dangerous when this "man" is the only major female character in the cast. If you have female characters who can be bad-assed in more feminine ways to offset her, the negative aspects of it decrease.
There is a lot of added complexity, too, if we include discussion of actual trans or genderfluid people as well. I don't go into that discussion here though, because Big Entertainment (tm) doesn't usually treat people outside of the gender binary, even today. There are a couple exceptions (like the Adjudicator in John Wick 3), but they're pretty rare.
