I promised you lovelies a fresh fight for this week, and it just so happens I watched a brand new Christmas movie last week to celebrate the holiday, and within it were some delightful fights, as well as a sweet plot, earnest acting, and adorable dialogue. That movie was Red One.
How fun was this premise! The jacked Santa, the warm messages of love, family, and what it means to ‘believe.’ But lest you hear this and think this film is a cinematic masterpiece, well it’s not. It’s silly and over the top and very playful with the mythologies it treats. I could see the MORA organization coming back for other magical stories involving other myths too, though. Easter Bunny murder mystery? Tooth Fairy goes rogue? I can see it. They had a cameo of the Headless Horseman in this film, after all. Why not?
There were a few fight scenes in this film, all of them pretty laden with CGI, but at the same time, when you’ve got Lucy Liu and The Rock in a movie, you know you’ve got some people who know their way around a theatrical scuffle. And I normally have zero interest in CGI-made fights; as a stunt fighter (and martial artist) myself, I’d much rather watch humans do it. So let’s see how this fight struck me, shall we? Meet me after the paywall, and watch out for ice-shuriken.
