Fight Clip Club: Random Movement Pic
Another pair of pics from my past, appropriate for the season.
It’s another Movement Pic day at FCC! Though you’ll see that, again, it’s not exactly a random choice—there’s a famous and big-time Shakespeare Festival that happens outdoors up in Boulder each summer, and it’s in full swing. These are from the first time I was cast in a show there, back in 1996 (yipes that’s a long time ago). I also have Shakespeare on the brain as my virtual club is going strong currently, doing Zoom readings on Fridays.
These dresses and matching giant puppet heads were amazing: there was a little pulley inside the head, which made those big eyes blink (and that was what we used instead of moving a mouth). The big prom dresses were rented, not made, and so the sparkly leafy fairy stuff on it had to be removable so they could return them at the end of the season. I wish I remembered who the costume designer was—this is obviously brilliant. The director was Joel G. Fink.
Joel’s concept for this show was a 1950s Alice in Wonderland vibe. The mechanicals had bowling shirts and work clothes with lunchboxes, and Puck had a silver leather jacket with an Elvis-esque pompadour, and of course that’s why we fairies wore the big prom dresses. You can see the huge disco ball above here—I believe it set some sort of record for size. We sang our lines in a ‘50s girl group harmony, and a central song was the doo-wop ‘Dream.’ We also sang ‘Blue Moon,’ and one night, a real blue moon hung in the sky above the set as we sang. Some real fairy magic there.
