Who wants to live forever?
I was racking my brain trying to come up with what fight to talk about this week (not that there isn’t plenty going on in my life, my country, and the world to think about besides that. Yeesh), and Highlander just flew into my head like a severed immortal’s dome.
The mid ‘80s really produced some fabulous and memorable Fantasy-genre films that stand up to the test of time. Princess Bride is one of those, and another undersung favorite of mine from this era was Ladyhawke. Add in movies like Labyrinth, Willow, and Conan the Destroyer, let alone earlier classics like Dark Crystal, Excalibur, and Krull, and we’ve got some of the best (or at least most fun) Fantasy flicks ever made.
Highlander is surprisingly really good still, even though it’s a commonly joked-about casting issue, that everybody’s accent is either terrible or misplaced, and much of the acting feels over the top to a modern ear. Clancy Brown, though, is utterly glorious in his role as the big bad Kurgan—he’s obviously having the time of his life doing this, and the glee is infectious.
Let’s check out the big climactic swordfight from this movie, shall we?
