Back in 1996 (or really 1997 which is when I ended up seeing this movie for the first time), one of my good friends and swordmates was called Happy, partially after this movie. In fact, that year at the RenFaire, we included lines from Happy Gilmore into our scripts, which largely consisted of dick jokes and movie quotes always anyway. Just after, I started dating a guy who was very interested in golf, and he and Happy would go golfing all the time. That guy ended up being my problematic husband (more about that in Saturday Morning Serial), and so golf ended up infusing its way into my world. We played Tiger Woods on the Xbox, went golfing (I suck at it though and so I didn’t go very often), and watched all the big tournaments both at home and at bars.
I also had all the basics of what I call Stupid Yet So Admittedly Hilarious Boyish Comedies in my lexicon as well: Anchorman, Dodgeball, Beerfest, and of course, Happy Gilmore. Yes, I can still quote them all. No, that does not mean you get to take away my intellect cred. The two things can indeed exist simultaneously.
