Funny enough, even though the stellar sci-fi Western TV gem Firefly is all about a group of ragtag rogues off to do crime (with hearts of gold, of course) in the vast reaches of the ‘verse, there are precious few actual fight scenes. I do enjoy all of them, brief as they all are but my very favorite: that between our Han Solo-esque hero Mal and his …well, technically his wife, I guess? Saffron, in ‘Trash,’ I can’t find a shareable clip of to save my life. Ah well.
But actually, this sword duel which serves as the crisis in episode ‘Shindig’ is actually better for the functions of Fight Clip Club, in that there’s a lot of very astute and clever dialogue surrounding what goes into a sword fight, and etc. So I’m actually not even mad that I have to use this one. Plus, this episode ranks high in my favorites.*
*Because Firefly only lasted one season, if you ask any Browncoat—er, fan, which their favorite episode is, they’ll just rank all the episodes in order. Like Columbo’s 1970s series (but I’d aver even more so), there really aren’t any stinkers, but some are more stellar than others. This one, to me, is one of the especially stellar ones. But enough persiflage, as Terry Freedman would say: let’s watch the fight!
