We’re going in a bit of a different direction this week in Fight Clip Club: instead of a scene from a movie, we’re looking at a different type of staged combat: pro wrestling. As I wrote about the concept of kayfabe last week, I wondered if this style of theatrical combat could have a place in Fight Clip Club. And then I thought, why not?

The main difference you’ll find between this fight and those that we yoink from out of movies, is mainly the context. Within a storyline, the fight happens organically within the storytelling, within the character arcs of those involved, and it’s not common at all to find a staged duel or ring fight within a story like that. Of course, stories that do involve scheduled set fights or rings will certainly include them; movies like: Monkey Man, Rocky, the TV show GLOW, and even the ending duel in Hamlet all are examples of how set fights can happen within the world of story.

But that’s not what wrestling is: wrestling is set up much in the way its non-theatrical, actual sport version of it is: a tournament of bouts that end with a winner. The difference here is in the presence of choreography. But let’s take a look at one of the weirder, funnier, more colorful wrestlers as they do what they do, shall we? Meet me after the paywall and we’ll chat.

Fight Clip Club is Very Nice, Very Evil, and Very Paywalled. If you want to join, upgrade to paid. Or, drop me a line if you can’t pay and I’ll take care of ya, no questions asked.
